Uninsured Student Health Insurance Plan (USHIP) is a program that provides coverage for students who do not have health insurance. USHIP is available at most colleges and universities in the United States. To be eligible, you must be a full-time student and have no other forms of health insurance. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers students a variety of health benefits. Among these benefits are waivers for some or all of the student’s health insurance. If you have questions about whether or not your health insurance qualifies for a waiver, please contact the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP). If you are an undergraduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill and do not have health insurance through your university, you may be eligible for a waiver. To be eligible for a waiver, you must meet the following requirements: You are admitted to UNC-Chapel Hill as a degree-seeking undergraduate student. You are not covered by another source of medical coverage, such as military service or workers’ compensation. Your health insurance does not cover emergency room visits, hospital stays longer than 72 hours, or prescription drugs. Your health insurance must include at least one primary care physician and one specialist. Your coverage must also include preventive care and mental health services. If you are an international student attending UNC-Chapel Hill, your health insurance must also cover emergency room visits, hospital stays longer than 60 days, and prescription drugs. How to apply

To apply for a waiver of health insurance eligibility, visit the Delaware Department of Insurance website and complete the online application. Once complete, the Department will electronically submit your waiver request to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will then review your eligibility and notify you of your decision. If granted, the waiver will remain in effect until it is terminated or modified by either you or the Delaware Department of Insurance.


If you are not covered by health insurance and need to see a doctor, then the Uncc waives your health insurance policy during regular campus business hours. The policy does not cover transportation costs if you elect to see a doctor off-campus, out of network, or at an unapproved location.
